This paper is to analyse the development and operation of ground robot weapon system in major countries and the ROK`s developmental tasks. The paper is composed of 6 chapters titled introduction; concept and type of robotic weapon system; current situation of developing/operating countries of robot weapons system; development and operation cases of major ground robot weapons; development/operation status of ROK`s ground robot weapons and its future task; and conclusion. The need for robotic weapon systems to replace humans in combat has been constantly argued. Already since the 1990s, 4 major power around the Korean peninsula including USA, and other major countries such as Israel, West Germany, and France are deploying and operating rudimentary level robots. As the ROK Army plans to reduce its troop force by more than 100,000 by 2022, it is imperative to power up a ground robotic weapon system that can replace humans. So the ROK Army has set up a ground robotic weapon system development plan and has pursued the development of explosive detection and removal robots and unmanned search vehicles. Korea needs to understand the current status and trends of development and operation of ground robotic weapons in the leading countries, and to develop and operate such ground robotic weapons so as not to fall behind. First, the ground robotic weapon system should make full use of the secured technologies in the private sector. Second, open platform architecture should be developed. Third, it is necessary to quickly dispose of the existing acquisition procedure and arrange a fast battlefield through a quick acquisition procedure. We Koreans should carefully study the implications of development and operation of robotic weapon systems in major countries and actively develop and operate our ground robotic weapons system.
