The purpose of this study is to analyze the Contact Improvisation Dance by Merleau-Ponty's Body Phenomenology. Based on theory Merleau-Ponty insisted that the human body plays a role in forming the world, he also said that the role of the human body is obtained and continued through the interactions with the world, and not a pure formality based on consciousness and intellect. As a result, this research analyzed the point where the body phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty, who maintained the interaction with other people, and the art spirit and characteristics of the body art performance intersected each other. Contact improvisation was certainly a new type of dance consisting of two important elements, contact and improvisation. Today, contact improvisation, which highlights non-hierarchy of the community, is a dance form quickly gaining popularity and being spread throughout. It has also brought about the development of other modern dance forms including ‘dance therapy’ and ‘hobby dance’. Contact improvisation, as inspired by the famous modern dancer Isadora Duncan, emphasizes freedom and natural spirit in dance. In this study, Contact improvisation dance recognized as the subject of body philosophy and further strengthened through “absorbed” based on the Merleau-Ponty's Body Phenomenology. Contact improvisation dance is not the subject of watching, but the subject through sympathetic with the audience.
