This paper aims to examine whether Venuti’s “good translation” and Berman’s “translation ethics” are equally valued by general readers. According to Venuti’s notion of good translation, the remainder which is theorized by Lecercle is used as a core concept for the study. The remainder includes regional and social dialects, slogans and cliches, technical terms and slang, archaisms and neologisms, metaphors and puns, stylistic innovations, and foreign loan words. A brief survey was also conducted on 34 college students with eight extracted sentences including remainders from Sophie Kinsella’s Remember Me? and its Korean translated one. The respondents were asked to evaluate whether those eight translations are good or not. The findings show that there is a difference on good translation between translation theorists or translators and readers. General readers rarely recognize the foreignness through the remainder unlike Venuti’s theory that the foreignness in a translated text can be recognized by releasing the remainder. Given the results, new questions may arise. For whom is good translation, and what should translation be oriented?
