Criticism on Sartre’s theory of the Other has consistently been raised that it ignores the positive aspects of human relationships. This article attempts to show that such criticism can be considerably weakened by appropriately distinguishing the meanings Sartre gives to ‘alienation’ and ‘conflict.’ To this end, I propose to read Sartre’s core thesis, the alienation of consciousness by the gaze of the Other, from an ontological point of view rather than from an axiological one. Furthermore, in relation to the chapter “Concrete Relations with Others” in Being and Nothingness, I argue that for Sartre there is no such thing as an inevitable reason that all human relationships must end in conflict and frustration. Finally, we will look at how ‘conversion’ can induce positive aspects of human relationships while partially referring to Notebooks for an Ethics. Through this, it will be shown that Sartre’s view is that even though alienation is an ontological phenomenon belonging to the essential meaning of the Other, conflicts in concrete human relationships can be overcome through conversion.
