The arguments in Foucault’s 1984 book, The History of Sexuality Ⅱ and Ⅲ, contain ethical information about self-care. Discussions of self-care ethics can also be found in Foucault’s lectures from the 1980s. The History of Sexuality, which was published in the form of an ethical genealogy based on classical text, exemplifies deconstructive writing. Despite the instability of the narratives, it is a work that directly identifies what ‘Foucault’s ethics’ is. The present work aims to show that Foucault’s essential signification of ethics is in ‘love’ and ‘freedom’. To this end, I will analyze and reconstruct the discussion on ‘love’ and ‘freedom’. First, I believe that Foucault’s fundamental reason for selecting the issue of love as the subject of ethics is to explain the concept of ‘freedom’ in self-care ethics. In examining this topic, this paper reveals how ethical issues can be organized by the forms of love. The discussion outlined above shows how the meaning of love and freedom is achieved as a result of giving up one’s power. In this way, we will ascertain the meaning of freedom as well as the essence of ‘freedom’ in Foucault ethics. As a result, this article will derive a new interpretation that can overcome the theoretical limitations by formulating love and freedom as the basis of the theory in Foucault’s ethics.
