The sovereignty recognition held by the authorities undergoes constant construction during the process of nation-building. Depending on various situational factors, it can either be projected or exert an impact on a nation’s foreign policies. This study is about the issue of maritime sovereign rights in Asia during the Détente Era, a period characterized by significant transitions in both the Cold War order and the international maritime order.
Notably, this study delves into the Park Chung-hee government’s recognition of maritime rights and interests. It examines how the government formulated its stance on continental shelf rights. And it also explores the dynamics of how South Korea’s relationships with China and Japan has formed. These inquiries can be best understood through an analysis of the negotiation process of the ‘Korea-Japan Continental Shelf Agreement.’ This is because the negotiation strategy of the Park Chung-hee government for addressing continental shelf rights interwove with the Détente, and it played a role in shaping relations among South Korea, China, and Japan. Furthermore, the international and regional dimensions of continental shelf rights disputes which emerged in East Asia, may serve as a testament to the non-ideological aspects of Park Chung-hee’s diplomacy during the Détente.
