The purpose of this research is to examine the transition of competition discourse of international ballet competitions. Overviewing the history of ballet competition, I argue that international ballet competitions in the Cold War era reflects the discourse of somatic nationalism, reminding of the mechanism of the Olympic Game, while those in the post-Cold War era adapted to the neoliberal meritocracy. Examining the transition of competition formats from the professional-oriented, result-oriented one to the student-oriented and process-oriented one, I assert that the transition does not necessarily mean a progress. Highlighting the marketization of dance competition, I problematize the substitution of education with competition.
