This study explores aspects of food in children’s literature. First of all, functions of food are categorized: growth and healing, relationships and communication, and power and desire. Food is one of the fundamental elements in literature. Food reflects in a society’s cultural aspects, which are what to eat, how to eat, when to eat, where to eat and why to eat. Aside from food itself, this research investigates functions and meanings of food in various children’s books. First, food functions as growth and healing of children. Second, as a tool for communication and building relationships, food operates as an important factor. Last but not least, food evokes desires toward power and desire itself. This shows meanings of food: a relationship building, healing process and communication tool. For analysis, various works are examined: Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the Grimm Brothers’ Hansel and Gretel. Food is not food itself in literature; as a pivotal factor food functions many important roles. On top of that, space draws plenty of attention; in particular, as a special venue, a forest is related to food. In a woods, children go through various difficulties which lead to their growth. In this regard, relationship between food and a woods are examined as well.
