This study examined the effect of household formation on residential mobility and tenure choice for the pre-elderly and elderly. The study employed the 2008-2020 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, along with a binary logistic model. The results showed that, first, all household formation variables such as separation, divorce, and widowhood did not have a significant effect on residential mobility. Second, in the case of separation, divorce, and widowhood within the past two years, all variables had significantly positive effects on residential mobility. Additionally, those who experienced widowhood within the past two years showed a distinct tendency to shift from homeownership to renting through housing consumption. Third, households who experienced changes in household formation within the past two years exhibited a higher tendency for residential mobility among the pre-elderly, as opposed to the elderly. Furthermore, divorce and widowhood within the past two years had negative effects on homeownership for the pre-elderly and elderly, respectively. The results of this research highlight policy implications from the perspective of household formation for pursuing housing stability through Aging in Place (AIP) within local communities.
