The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between academic stress and burnout in female high school students. The subjects of the survey were 256 female high school students in a local city. An online survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire from November 1 to December 31, 2022. The results of the study showed that the higher the academic stress, the higher the burnout of the survey subjects (p<0.001), while the lower the self-esteem, the higher the burnout (p<0.001). The burnout of the survey subjects showed a significant positive correlation with academic stress (r=0.584, p<0.01), and a significant negative correlation with self-esteem (r=-0.472, p<0.01), As a result of verifying the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between academic stress and the burnout of the survey subjects, it was found that self-esteem plays a partial mediating role between academic stress and burnout (Z=-4.97, p<0.01). These results suggest that the self-esteem of female high school students may lower the academic stress related to burnout.
