The study aims at shedding light on the contribution of phonetics to the study of Korean pronunciation as a foreign language. The study examines significance of describing from perspectives of phonetics in the study of Korean pronunciation as a foreign language that deals with interlingual pronunciation or interlanguage pronunciation. To this end, first, the characteristics of the research areas of phonology and phonetics are outlined. Second, the functions of phonetics in Korean phonology research based on related research cases are elucidated. Third, the effectiveness of phonetics in studying Korean pronunciation as a foreign language is explained focusing on the results of previous research. Finally, the function of phonetics in the study of Korean pronunciation as a foreign language is defined comparatively with the case of research of Korean phonology.
