The purpose of this study is to analyze design units and contents focusing on elementary school art textbooks according to the 2015 revised curriculum, and to find out the current status of design education by confirming design education in the school field through interviews with elementary school teachers. The background of such research is the lack of research that reflects the current status of design education in elementary schools. In this study, the contents of design education were examined through 5th to 6th grade art textbooks according to the 2015 revised curriculum. In addition, in the case of the interviews, it was intended to understand the current status of design education in the school field for elementary school teachers. In the case of art textbooks, terms such as design process, daily supplies, and ideation were frequently mentioned as a result of the analysis, and the social role of design was examined through various design fields. In the case of subsequent interviews, four elementary school teachers were conducted, all of whom majored in art and had more than a completion of the Ph.D. program. Through interviews, the main story was that teachers and students feel a lack of clear understanding of design due to the mixture of design concepts in the school field and that they feel the limitations of educational support to develop teachers’ capabilities to teach design. This cited environmental factors that had little exposure to design in teacher training and competency cultivation as the main cause. However, teachers are aware of this unfortunate situation and are aware of the importance of design education, so teachers’ interest and class development should be actively carried out through various training. This study was able to confirm the current content of elementary school design education and the current status of school, and the direction of improvement according to problem recognition was also estimated. In addition, a lot of interest is required in design education in elementary school art subjects, and related research should continue more actively.
