The current high school baseball landscape in 2024 includes a total of 101 teams with 3,901 players, including club teams, registered with the Korea Baseball Softball Association (KBSA). Among the high school seniors, excluding those who are absent for reasons such as medical leave, 793 students are expected to graduate and participate in the professional baseball rookie draft. In the 2023 rookie draft, 92 high school graduates were chosen by the ten professional baseball teams, resulting in a selection rate of 11.6%. In other words, about 10-12% of high school graduates make it into professional baseball each year, leaving the remaining 90% of players uncertain about their future.
Therefore, this study focused on the baseball team at A High School in Seoul during their winter training period and implemented an eight-session mental coaching program based on the GROW model as part of a psychological support effort to enhance motivation and achievement and examine their functions with the application of Merton’s functional analysis framework.
The results yielded the following conclusions. The educational impact of the mental coaching program resulted in nominal functional benefits such as routine formation and motivation. However, nominal dysfunction was observed in the areas of reduced concentration, a lack of clear solutions to practical communication issues, inadequate discussions on sharing experiences related to trauma and overcoming challenges.
