In this paper, optimal design method of Direct Current excited Reluctance Motor (DCRM) is investigated to improve torque density. A 12/8 DCRM was optimized and analyzed by finite elemental method in this study. The result of optimization revealed that widened the stator pole width and yoke width improved average torque by suppressing magnetic saturation. In addition, it was showed that torque ripple is reduced by making the armature poles and the excitation poles different pole width in the stator poles. As a comparison result with Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), it was shown that the average torque of DCRM was equal to or better than that of SRM which the same size as DCRM.
Furthermore, it was shown that the optimized DCRM has a lower torque ripple than SRM. In addition, it was shown that the efficiency of DCRM is higher than that of SRM at high and low load conditions.
