The purpose of this paper is to examine the changes and developments in South Korea"s environmental policy from the 1960s when environmental administration and policy began to the present 2020s, evaluating the achievements to date and reflecting on future tasks. The research methods utilized literature analysis and analysis of existing data. The research results indicate that the temporal framework of South Korea"s environmental policy is shifting from reactive control to proactive prevention, future-oriented creative policies, with policy instruments evolving from regulatory policies to economic incentives, voluntary participation, cooperative policies, and fragmented, piecemeal policies to integrated and coordinated policies. Furthermore, key changes in environmental policy are identified, and suggestions are made for expanding the scope of environmental policy, developing environmental organizations to improve institutional coherence, advocating for proactive environmental policies considering ecological carrying capacity, addressing the limitations of GDP, and proposing the introduction and use of indicators such as the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) to aim for sustainable development.
