This paper examines Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s novel, A Grain of Wheat, whose plot depicts an unjust society abundant with personal betrayal and anti-social treachery. Ngũgĩ’s exploration of betrayal goes beyond conventional boundaries, encompassing various facets of society from betrayal at an individual level to the one within relationships, communities, anti-government movements, and ruling party policies. Indeed, the characters in the novel are socially and politically not free from not only a narrow sense of individual betrayal but also a broader sense of communal treachery. Ngũgĩ describes these aspects as something devoid of the ‘Principle of Good Faith’ in friendships, peer relations, romantic relationships, and national ethnic communities. Specifically, he shows how Jomo Kenyatta, the leader of the Mau Mau nationalist movement, ruthlessly betrays his supporters after being elected as a president and achieving independence. The story can be likened to Dante’s epic poem Inferno, which depicts one of the final and deepest levels of hell, known as the Ninth Circle, as the place reserved for traitors, betrayers, and oath breakers, such as Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus Christ. This implies that Ngũgĩ tries to represent the acts of betrayal and treachery as the worst inhumane acts that impedes the formation of the just society.
