During the mid-6th century, the rise of the Gokturks in the northern plains of China marked the beginning of a significant relationship between the Central Plains dynasties and the Gokturks. Leveraging their formidable military strength characteristic of nomadic peoples, the Gokturks posed a threat to the Central Plains region. At the time, northern China, divided between two separate powers, sought to safeguard their own security by providing resources to the militarily dominant Gokturks. Exploiting the conflict between these two powers, the Gokturks actively secured the resources and diplomatic leverage they needed. Research on the relationship with the Gokturks during the Southern and Northern Dynasties period has been relatively neglected, with scant attention paid to this area compared to other topics. However, this period provides an excellent case study for understanding how the relationship between nomadic powers and the Central Plains dynasties evolves, particularly when the nomadic powers assert dominance over the Central Plains. Therefore, this paper provides a detailed analysis of the relationship between northern China and the Gokturks during the mid-6th century, drawing on documented events. It particularly focuses on elucidating the Gokturks’ policy of “以華制華” (using one Chinese faction against the other) amidst the division in northern China.
