This paper aims to examines the feature of linguistic expressions and meanings in Russian proverbs related to ‘муж(husband)’ － ‘жена(wife)’ in a social and cultural context, and examines the forms and conceptualization of husbands and wives reflected in metaphors expressions in proverbs. Proverbs related to husband and wife reflect the character, relationship, family values, and home life of husband and wife as family members in the lives of Russians, and clearly show their respective roles and distribution of responsibilities.
Through the analysis of vocabulary and form, syntactic components and structures of Russian proverbs related to the subject, and the semantic structure and features of proverbs, we were able to examine the commonalities and differences that appear in the language of proverbs. In addition, various metaphorical methods are utilized to implement the meaning of proverbs, and through this, we were able to confirm the various cognitive structures, value-oriented and behavioral normative contents, and cultural customary specificities of the existence, relationship, and life aspects of husband and wife as family members recognized by Russians. Based on the feature of proverbial language that reflects Russian society, era, region, and lifestyle, it is thought that further research is needed from various angles.
