This paper aims to elucidate the dynamics of sexual violence disclosure in Japanese society in 2023-2024, and its complex interplay with Japanese media culture and feminism. Sexual violence remains a global issue, despite historical efforts such as international feminist movements and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. The second wave of feminism, which emerged mainly in the West since 1969, has championed women's rights and the elimination of gender discrimination worldwide. However, sexual violence has persisted into the 21st century, as evidenced by the 2017 #MeToo movement, which originated in Hollywood and sparked global protests against sexual violence and harassment, including in Japan. Despite a perceived lag in the spread of the #MeToo movement in Japan compared to other nations, this paper argues that ongoing developments suggest a more gradual progression. The reluctance of Japan's #MeToo movement to expand rapidly can be attributed to the suppression of feminist ideologies and activism in the public sphere since the spread of second-wave feminism in the 1980s. The stigmatisation of feminist concepts and language from the late 1990s to the 2010s hindered public discourse on feminism. In addition, Japan's mainstream media culture, which is predominantly patriarchal, confined feminist activism to private spaces and popular culture, perpetuating gender-discriminatory content. In the late 2010s, under the influence of South Korean feminist culture, Japan witnessed a surge in feminist discussions on social media platforms, despite the prevalence of misogynistic rhetoric. Finally, by examining three cases of disclosures of sexual violence, this paper highlights the ongoing nature of the #MeToo movement in Japan and offers recommendations for addressing shortcomings in Japanese media culture.
