This study seeks to understand the current status of South Korea's public assistance system and examine what needs to be improved. The public assistance system is the last social safety net for the most vulnerable classes of society, and in South Korea, it is centered around the National Basic Livelihood Security System. We began this study after realizing that this public assistance system is facing various challenges due to aging, the increase of new vulnerable groups due to changes in the labor market, and the sporadic introduction of new programs. Based on government and National Assembly documents and research paper from national research institutes, this study provides an overview of the current status and problems of South Korea's public assistance system in three aspects: ‘comprehensiveness of the system’, ‘sufficiency of benefits’, and ‘delivery system’. Also this study would like to suggest directions for future improvement. As a result of the analysis, the problem of blind spots in terms of comprehensiveness of the system, the level of some programs’ benefits in terms of benefit sufficiency, and the problem of segmentation/fragmentation in terms of the delivery system were prominent. Addressing these problems was the key to solving problems in the public assistance system in the future.
