This paper aims to examine the co-evolution of humans and non-humans, focusing specifically on the interactions between humans and technology in a posthuman society, through an analysis of three stories by Ted Chiang. I assess the impact of technology on human cognition, social structures, and identity, highlighting how the proliferation of digital technologies and information reshapes and transforms affect. Chiang’s works illustrate how information appears in various forms and contributes to shaping human experiences, while also examining how such informational narratives induce changes in emotions, sensations, and cognition. This paper specifically focuses on “The Evolution of Human Science,” “The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling,” and “Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom,” analyzing how technological transfers could fundamentally alter human self-conception and identity. The technological advancements and their commercialization discussed in these stories prompt a multidimensional exploration of posthuman affect, examining how the blurring boundaries between humans and technology expand emotional interfaces. Moreover, the narratives probe the potential for technology to redefine human ethics and agency, suggesting profound implications for personal autonomy and societal norms. Lastly, this paper contemplates the future trajectory of human evolution, advocating for a critical assessment of technology’s role in shaping not only human capabilities but also the ethical frameworks within which such capabilities are employed.
