In the film Mountains May Depart (2015), the female protagonist Tao frequently contemplates the question, “Is it a geometry problem? Or algebra?” This paper examines the symbiotic relationship between algebraic and geometric challenges in the context of Chinese neoliberalism and liquid modernity, using the film as a focal point. By analyzing its narrative and visual elements, the paper explores how the film reflects the fluidity and precarity of contemporary Chinese neoliberalism. Algebraic problems in the film symbolize the complex choices characters face in navigating a rapidly changing socio-economic environment. At the same time, geometric challenges represent the spatial and temporal shifts that characterize the breakdown of conventional boundaries in liquid modernity. The film highlights the interconnectedness of economic growth and cultural transformation in China’s neoliberal society, set against the backdrop of global liquid modernity. This research demonstrates how the film captures the essence of fluidity and uncertainty as defining features of modern life, transcending cultural and geographic confines.
