NAVER Webtoon was listed on NASDAQ in 2024. This milestone confirmed the global recognition of webtoons as a major content industry. It also signaled the platform’s potential to expand beyond digital comics into a mainstream storytelling medium. After its IPO, NAVER Webtoon announced strategies for global expansion, platform enhancement, and IP business diversification. However, financial reports revealed stagnation in user growth and declining premium engagement. These trends raised concerns about its long-term market position.
This study applies Chasm Theory to analyze NAVER Webtoon’s post-IPO trajectory. It is the first attempt to examine webtoons through this theoretical lens. Chasm Theory explains that innovations often face structural barriers when transitioning from Early Adopters to the Early Majority. If this gap is not overcome, growth stagnates. NAVER Webtoon successfully built an early adopter base. However, its expansion slowed due to challenges in global reach, declining premium revenue, and competition from short-form platforms such as YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.
This study analyzes NAVER Webtoon’s S-1 Registration Statement and market performance data. It identifies strategic barriers aligned with the Chasm framework. The findings indicate that sustainable growth requires targeted market expansion, enhanced user experience, and an integrated IP-based media ecosystem.
This research extends Chasm Theory beyond technology into the digital content industry, specifically webtoons. It provides a structured framework to assess globalization challenges in emerging content platforms. Future research should explore regional user adoption trends and new user acquisition metrics. This will help refine long-term strategies for webtoon industry growth.

네이버웹툰의 2024년 나스닥 상장은 웹툰이 글로벌 콘텐츠 산업에서 경제적 가치를 인정받았음을 보여주는 사례다. 이는 웹툰이 단순한 디지털 만화를 넘어 글로벌 스토리텔링 산업으로 확장될 가능성을 시사하는 중요한 전환점으로 평가된다. 상장 이후 네이버웹툰은 세계 시장 확대, 플랫폼 고도화, IP 비즈니스 다각화 등 다양한 전략을 발표했다. 그러나 이후 공개된 실적 지표는 기대에 미치지 못했으며, 이에 따라 성장 정체와 위기론이 대두되었다.
네이버웹툰의 상장 이후 경영 전략을 분석하고, 캐즘(Chasm) 이론을 적용하여 웹툰 산업이 주류 시장으로 자리 잡는 과정에서 직면한 구조적 한계를 조명한다. 캐즘 이론에 따르면 혁신적 기술이나 콘텐츠가 시장에 확산하는 과정에서 선각수용자(Early Adopters)와 전기다수자(Early Majority) 간의 단절이 발생하며, 이를 극복하지 못하면 성장이 둔화할 수 있다. 네이버웹툰이 기존 독자층을 기반으로 한 시장에서는 성과를 거두었으나, 신규 이용자 유입 과정에서 글로벌 확장 전략의 한계, 유료 모델의 성장 둔화, 숏폼 콘텐츠와 같은 경쟁 미디어의 부상 등 여러 요인이 복합적으로 작용하며 캐즘 현상이 나타났음을 분석하였다.
이 연구는 네이버웹툰의 IPO 관련 보고서(S-1 Registration Statement) 및 관련 실적 자료를 바탕으로 상장 이후의 성장 전략을 연구했다. 또한, 캐즘 이론을 활용하여 네이버웹툰이 초기 시장에서 대중 시장으로 성장하는 과정중에 발생한 장애 요인을 규명하였다. 연구 결과 네이버웹툰이 세계 시장에서 지속적인 성장을 이루기 위해서는 보다 정교한 전략이 필요하다는 점이 확인되었다. 향후 국가별 맞춤형 시장 확산 전략, 사용자 경험 차별화, IP 기반 미디어믹스 및 산업 간 융합 전략 등의 대응이 요구된다.
본 연구의 의의는 캐즘 이론을 웹툰 산업에 적용한 최초의 연구로 기존의 기술 산업 중심으로 논의되었던 캐즘 개념을 콘텐츠 산업으로 확장하여 적용 가능성을 논의했다는 점에서 학문적·산업적으로 의미가 있다. 향후 연구에서는 국가별 독자 수용 형태, 신규 독자 유입률 변화 등의 실증적 데이터가 축적된다면, 웹툰 산업이 직면한 캐즘 현상을 보다 면밀히 분석하고 실질적인 성장 전략을 구체화할 수 있을 것이다.
