The age gap among generations has been getting bigger as the average life span has broadened and the age when people get married and give birth has grown higher. Also, more and more women go out in the world and do social activities and there is the ongoing and strength-gaining tendency that old people take a greater responsibility in domestic chores. On the other hand, the aged who are incapable of doing household chores and only do a limited circle of things due to worse health conditions in this aging society do feel left out as an outsider in terms of their spiritual status and housing life. There is found an increasing number of those cases since the perception of the traditional support and attitude toward one's family undergoes changes. In addition, the environment of residence in a general apartment house which was not designed and built considering the three generations together in a home is necessarily poor. The bad news is that apartment houses of limited space are more common than detached homes which give a great flexibility in space extension and alteration.
With these problems under consideration, this study set out to classify patterns of living space use of families of three generations living together in an apartment house, to get a grasp of the characteristics and problems, and finally to compare the preference for three generations' living together and the spatial appropriateness according to patterns of living space use.
