In this thesis, I studied the specificity of the poetry of Saeng myngpa(생명파) and its significance in the history of literature in 1930's from the view point of modem poetry.
The appearance of Saengmyungpa can be thought as not only a reaction against the modernism and pure literature and but also a trial to get rid of anxiety in literature of those days. The Sangmyungpa reduced the sense of collapse of the society, which were felt as death of an organic body, to will of life the motives of which are basic sense, instinct and body.
I derived the will of life from the image of body in the works of each member of Saengmyungpa. Sensual body, sexual pleasure and fascination in Sea Jung- Joo's poetry can be interpreted as willingness to take positive view of life. Oh Jang-Whan emphasized vitality with irony, that is substituting sick body for reality. With emphasis on corrupt body, he resisted the sickness and decadence of the culture at that time. In Yoo Chi-Whan's poetry, body always appears as a prisoner tied up to lands. He search for rock-like solid body which overcame all the tragic real life.
Sangmyungpa conceived the modernity of Japanese colonial times and built a creative poetics. As we understanding modernity as a reflection on the new, it has very important implication in history of literature that they gave special meaning to such a general theme as human and life.
I evaluated the significance of Saengmyungpa poetry as following; Contrary to the preceding ages, Saengmyungpa reposited human being to the place of subject of individuality and life. With regard to its contemporary poetry, it tried to move the subjectivity that was withered by anxious literature to the dimension of affirmation of life and search for life. Besides, it is also important in the sense that it reflected an ardent desire to be modem subject overwhelming a imperialistic and fascist oppression.
In conclusion, I found that Sangmyungpa established modem poetics which is meanigful not only in 1930's but also nowadays.
