The purpose of this article is to examine the general tendency of the study of Korean Modem Literature since 1980, when an intensive effort began to be made in order to state the principle of the overall Korean Modem Literature. The principle in the Korean Modem Literature has been studied from two kinds of viewpoint.
One is National Literature's view, which emphasizes Korean particular situation such as its colony, the partition into South and North in the Korean history. It defines a national crisis as a major conflict and considers literary works on the problem of the national crisis as contributing to the development in the Korean Literature history. However the viewpoint has a problem in that it restricted the national crisis only to political issues such as the colony and the division of Korea and paid little attention to other sufferings human experienced in modem society, for example, civilization, reification, loneliness. As a result, it excluded the works of modernism in the literature history which occupied an essential part of the Korean Modem Literature history.
The other viewpoint is to explain the Korean literature since modem period in terms of realism and modernism It focused on the problem that capitalism caused human to become thingness ('reification') as well as it brought class conflict and people conflict. They interpreted works on class conflict as realism and works on the reification of human as modernism However this viewpoint is incomplete in that it does not explain the characteristic of literary practice done in the underdeveloped countries.
