A method to control the combustion rate of the filtrated particulate matter (PM) in the ceramic filter of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) system was studied in this work. Ceramic cordierite filter is a major component of the DPF system and susceptible to thermal shock. In this point of view, a stable regeneartion of the filter is the most important thing in commercialization of the DPF system. There are four factors that govern the regeneration process like as a initial particulate loading weight, a space velocity, an oxygen concentration and a temperature of the gas that entrained into the filter during regeneration. The first and second have been considered as main factors from early studies. The third was realized in the vehicle for the first time by Pattas. However the last was not yet considered as a controllable factor which would be realized in the vehicle.
In this work, a method to control the gas temperature entrained into the filter during regeneration was designed and the results by the method in steady state engine conditions were analyzed. Finally it was considered that this method was very effective to control the combustion rate of the PM during regeneration in almost engine conditions.
