The Old Joseon (Dangun Joseon) state was composed of many geosu 渠帥 or feudal states. The geosu states documented in the texts are as follows: Buyeo :夫餘, Gojuk 孤竹, Goguryeo 高句麗, Ye 濊, Maek 貊, Chu 追, Jinbeon 眞番, Naknang 樂浪, Imdun 臨屯, Hyeondo 玄寃, Suksin 肅愼, Cheonggu 靑丘, Yangyi 良夷, Ynagju 楊洲, Bal 發, Yu 兪, Okjeo 汚沮 Kijaguk 箕子國, Biryu 佛流, Haengin 荇人, Gaema 蓋馬, Guda 句茶, Jona 藻那, Juna 朱那, Jin 辰 , and Han 韓 (Samhan 三韓). There must have been more feudal states than those listed above. The religious center as the Holy Land and the area controlled directly by Dangun (直轄地) were on the top of the many geosu states. The religious leaders resided in the unmoveable Holy Land documented as sinsi i]i$-m in the Dangun myth. The founding group of Old Joseon stayed in the area controlled directly by Dangun that included both the Sinsi and the capital areas. Controlling his own jikhalji directly, Dangun delegated many geosu to rule their own areas. The many geosu supported Dangun as the common ruler, undertaking their obligation for him in such state affairs as religion, politics, economy and military. Accordingly, we may use the term, geosugukje gukga 渠帥國制國家, for designating the state structure of Old Joseon. Looking more specifically into the state structure of Old Joseon, the basic unit of the Old Joseon society was maeul or village. Based on the political status and function, the maeul is classified into sinsi, capital, provincial capital (gukeup 國邑), and general village. Because religion was superior to politics in ancient times, sinsi as the religious center and Holy Land was the spiritual homeland of Old Joseon people. The capital was the center of contemporary politics so that the rulers of Old Joseon resided there to rule the entire state. Geosu stayed in the provincial capital to rule the people in each geosu state. The widespread general villages formed the basis of the Old Jopseon state. Structurally speaking, therefore, the Old Joseon state was organized with several different level of maeuls in their function. Since numerous villages (maeuls) were the basis of the state, we may call it 'the state of
accumulated maeul' or maeul jipjeok gukga 邑落集積國家
