During the colonial period, the fierce debates on the Dangun took place in Korea and Japan. Japan has tried to rationalize the colonial rule through the Dangun, But Korea has strengthen the nationalism through the Dangun. The studies on Dangun in Japan have two categories. One side has tried to take that Dangun is the brother of the Japanese god as evidence of the ilseondongjoron(日鲜同祖論). Another side has denying the existence of Dangun and included the Korean history among the manseonsagwan(滿鮮史觀). The studies criticizing the Japan's studies on Dangun in Korea raised recognition on the Great Dangun. These studies on the great Dangun that Dangun was the mighty ruler of the great territory were leaded to the studies on Dangun in the cultural angle and materialistic angle. The studies on Dangun in the cultural angle emphasized the mythical and cultural characteristics, the studies on Dangun in the materialistic angle emphasized the socio-economical basis of the myth. These disputes between Korea and Japan during the colonial period have given us get many academic achievements.
