Korea is a country that is a major Internet user: approximately 30 million of Korea's 47 million people use the Internet (Ministry of Information and Communication, 2004). Due to this mega-trend of Internet usage among Korean youths, there has been much research focusing on the positive and negative impact of Internet and computer usage. However, very little data has been collected with regard to patterns of Internet use among Korean Christian college students and seminarians. This study could be called an exploratory study.
The purpose of the study is to analyze the systematic characteristics of the Internet usage among Christian college students in Korea. The systematic characteristics show the structural correlations of Internet usage.
The following research questions were developed:
1. How much time and how often do students log on to the Internet?
2. How many Cyber communiities are the students involved in actively?
3. What kind of information do the students change?
4. How long have the students been registered in their Cyber conmumities?
5. Are students on the Internet more prone to be loyal to certain Cyber communities? If so, why?
The method of research is a survey using a questionnaire. The data was collected from a survey on the Internet in Cyber communities of Christian college and theological seminary students. The data was analyzed by the dynamic correlation of the organizing factors of Internet usage. One hundred and three students from Christian colleges and theological seminaries in the Seoul area were surveyed.
Major findings of this study are: first, Korean Christian college students spend rather long hours (average one and half hours) using the Internet; second, they actively participate in the Cyber community (average 3 active communities out of 10 communities); third, Cyber community ties into a strong networking system based on strong solidarity among members, reciprocity of relationships with an exchange of information, and an efficacy of Internet working as a social capital, and finally, the strong attachment to the Internet among students maintainsacquaintance and solidarity. The future task is for the Christian community to develop and extend Cyber community as on alternative Christian teaching and learning space for college students in regards to evangelism and discipleship.
