This thesis is an analysis of time-space structure in Yeom, Sang-Seob's Mansejeon(만세전). Generally, a concept of time and space is characteristically defined as a social institution, which is taught and compelled by society. Thus, it works as an apriori condition which controls an individual's experience, behavior, and value judgement. However, in Korean history as a colony, we can find the disagreement between a traditional time-space concept in the private world and a modem time-space concept, in the public world. This disagreement, overlapped on the contradictions of modernity, yields many different peculiarities in the modem Korean literature.
I focused on the novel of Yeom, Sang-Seob, which went deeper into the consciousness of modernity as a contradictory experience. Yeom, Sang-Seob's Mansejeon no more grasped the temporality as a development. Temporal progressiveness invents new contradictions. Therefore, the demend to seek a new alternative showed up, not only the consciousness of the historical necessity of the transition to the modem. As a result, the existence of an old tradition, which had looked an Other in the course of modernization, gained a renewed attention. Different instances of reality began to be represented in the coexitence or the transition of the traditional and the modem.
The 1920's was a period when the colonial modernization was revealed as a contradictory experience of development and undevelopment, progress and retreat at the same time. At this moment, once otherized elements which were negated and obliterated by modernity gained the new significance. The novelists criticized the modernization discourse by combining many elements which had been outdated in time and peripheralized in space. In Mansejeon, 'the past' and 'the periphery' were nothing but the image of Other which should be negated in the course of modernization. It is the reason why an establishment of subject always appears as a partial sacrifice of self in the colony. Accordingly, the modem subject in a colony could not help but undergo the crisis of a division of subject.
