Many people thinks that Korean society is entering into a digital age or an age of the second media. This is true when we consider its popularity and that it is the dominant media. But from a sociological perspective much of its characters are still vague. For ensuring our age is a digital age, we must accumulate facts and evidence in diverse fields - culture, economy, politics, and engineering etc.
This study aims to describe crisis of literary identity in digital age. It first separates so-called 'cyber literature' from 'digitalized literature'. The former means new forms of writing in cyber space, and the latter digitalization in literary creation, reception and publishing. A lot of poets and novelists believe that new forms of digital media and 'cyber literature' can enhance their social influences and enlarge their artistic field But their expectation misses two important facts. All kinds of digitalized literature are not cyber literature and realities in modem literature are different from virtual realities in cyber literature. Of course, virtual reality is not yet realized for digital technology but making perfect virtual reality is the ultimate dream of all kind of digital mania such as scientists, engineers, digital artists etc.
This thesis emphasizes on the concept of modern literature. Those who think that cyber literature is a form of literature which relieves crisis of modem literature or those who think that it is just transformed popular literature overlooked this. When we consider technical or economical capacity of 'hypertext literature' we must consider if hypertext or non-liner text can be included in the field of literature, e.g. The concept of literature, modem literature in particular, is a product of history. Modem literature shows modernity, modem spirits, modern way r:£ life, modem landscape etc. In short, it has inspected realities of modem world. But cyber literature does not interest 'old fashioned' reality. Cyber literature pays attention to virtual. realities, and its main project is to describe or to make funtasy as if it is real. It is different from literature in that in literature all fantasy ultimately indicate real world by way of rhetoric strategy; symbol, allegory, metaphor, etc.
In a digital age, separate field of arts may combine into new digital art. It must be a new form which conglomerates fine arts, music, fi1m;, novels, poems and digital techniques. As literature cannot become cyber literature, a writer cannot become a cyber artist. Writers have studied realities and not virtual realities, So we must think why we develop cyber space before we consider how we develope it. Those who think that to inspect realities is the main purpose for literature must remain o/f-line, for on-line realities do not exist in life.
In conclusion, this thesis shows that writers must not strive to survive in cyber space, for cyber space and its realities are different from due of real world without which literature cannot exist.
