In Korean modem novels, metaphor and metonymy are the key concepts to make known novelistic tendency. Those are frameworks showing exchange and opposition of novels. Novels in 1900's are intended metonymically as a narrative device but to be impaired because of following the ancient novels's conventional metaphor. Lee Kwangsoo(이광수) exerts for overcoming the bound of 1900's with elaborate metonymical narrative. On the contrary Kim Dongin(김동인) attempts to write an aesthetic and metaphoric novel. Yeom Sangseob(염상섭) puts together characteristics of Lee an Kim's novels, then Korean novel is arranged as a modern metonymical narrative. In 1930's metaphor and metonymy is represented as the principles of modernism and realism Modernism is constructed with metaphoric(=molecular) novels, but realism is constructed with metonymical( =molar) novels. Lee Sang's(이상) novels wander about those two principles, so inwardness of his novels is complex. Metaphor and metonymy are the two aspects of human existence as wll as of modem novel. Modem Korean novelists have written a novel by amalgamating properly matapor and metonymy.
