This study is on the relation between 'tradition' and 'modernity' in the literature of North Korea. The word 'modernity' is not seen in the criticism. The modernity has two meanings. The one is evaluative and the other descriptive. These two modernities are significant only in reference to the project of the future. In the literary criticism of North-Korea in 1950-1960, modernity is at the first 'contemporary'. But this contemporaneity is not the same as modernity. Modernity is historical, however, contemporaneity is not. The other modernity in the literary criticism can be seen in 'socialist realism'. 'Socialist realism' has a modern desire. It has the frustrated desire to make the unfamilial, familial. Socialist realism is the rearragement of that desire. The tradition is always an evaluative one. The first is 'patriotism'. It was significant during the struggle for independence. Patriotism is modern. For it is presupposmg the 'nation-state'. Tradition is not one, but plural. I think that the link between modernity and tradition in the literary criticism of North-Korea is 'contemporaneity'. however, the relationship is not transparent.
