It is widely believed that literature is threatened by mass culture and new types of media. In recent times, literary works have adapted to new cultural trends in a variety of ways. This study examines the tension between literature and mass cultUre in the literature of the 1970s. In the 1970s, with the development of Korean mass media and mass culture, best-sellers appeared and consumers of the mass culture increased explosively. Home of Stan, the first real best-seUer novel in Korea, was published in 1973 and made young readers wild with enthusiasm. It became the icon of 1970s youth and pop culture.
To understand the cultural phenomena caused by Home of Stars, it is essential to analyze the trends of mass culture, literature, film, and their interactions. Particularly it is important to understand the 'youth culture' of the 1970s. Therefore, in this study, the relationship between the novel Home of Stars and the 'youth culture' receives particular attention, This study shows that the novel Home of Stars created a sensation and sparked new fashions in culture and the literary world and represented young peoples' passion and their desire for a new type of culture.
