Lee Byeonggi's new poetic diction of Sijo(時調) was strongly influenced from the vernacularization movement in Modern Korean. In addition, The diction can apply to a specific genre Sijo as well as to the Korean literature overall. It reflects a significant change of episteme on the literature from the medieval to the modern in Korea.
Lee Byeonggi's point of view on Sijo as well as the literature in general is, first those should express 'internal experiences' of the self free from the medieval universialism, so called 'chinese connotations'(漢意). Here the 'internal' is referred to a speech(a voice), and an expression(a writing) is understood to externalize the voice into the outer world. To pursuit it, he introduced a new method of 'a drawing from life'(寫生) into his poetic diction, which does not only express the authors' understanding on structures of the things in order to visualize it, but also makes the literature contain the most humanistic meaning.
Second, Lee Byeonggi considered the literary material to be a very important matter in writing poetry, and tried to find out the word free from conventional 'connotations,' so which helps the poet to draw the thing itself into his poetry.
His point of view on the materials demonstrates a newly opened relation between the 'thing' and the 'feeling=word.' The poetry now have to express a poet's subjective response on the thing in the linguistic realm, inside whose threshold the word of poet is believed to correspond with the thing.
Third is a problem of literary terms. Lee Byeonggi convinced himself that 'the vernacularization' was a base to convent the modern literary words, but conflicted with which, he insisted a use of archaic words, and even that of dead words. To be worthy of taking our notice, it exposes an idealogical characteristic of the vernacularizaion of modern literature, which serves to a political purpose of the modern nation state.
Forth, Lee Byeonggi believed, for Sijo to become one of modern literary genres, that it has to break off relations with the Sijochang, a sort of singing. He displaced a traditional melody(曲調) of Sijochang with a style(格調), a combination of the voice with the feeling. In order to invent a new verse style, he adoptted subtle nuances of Korean as well as visual images, with which, he made up for an aesthetic crack resulted from the elimination of music from Sijo. He considered that the nuance is a kernel making Sijo be like themselves.
