When we research into the history of korean catholic church in the persecution period, we are faced with various difficulties; one of them is a limitation of the usable documents. From that reason, it could be hard to verify on which kind of policy the french catholic missionaries who governed korean catholic church worked. If we would treat the missionary policy of french priests in Korea, it needs to investigate not only the pastoral activities of french personages, but also the basic missionary policy of the la Societe des Missions-Etrangeres de Paris (the MEP) and its operations in all the East Asian local churches. Particularly the study about the facts subject to the history of Chinese catholic church is much important, because some french priests in Korea had worked in China in their former curriculum vitae.
In tracing the missionary policy on the basis of which the MEP have acted in the East Asian area, we found the fact that an apostolic vicar who was called Mgr Dufresse, member of the MEP, held a synod at Chung Ching of Sutchuan in 1803. It was the first synod in the history of Chinese catholic church. Of course, this synod named by Synodus Sutchuensis was an affair belonged to the Chinese catholic church. But it is also significant both to Korean catholic church and to the whole history of the missionary activities of the MEP in Eastern Asia.
This article treated why the synod of Sutchuan was held in 1803, what kinds of agenda it decided, and the significations that the synod occupied in the East Asian catholic churches. Above all, as a preliminary work, we examined the missionary policy of the MEP since its establishment. Then the latter half of this article analysed the circumstances before and after the synod, its process, the decisions. And it gave light upon what was the meaning of the decrees in reference to the history of Chinese and East Asian catholic church. In the conclusion, we suggested some problems for further studies by presenting some issues with regard to the korean catholic church in 19th century.
