This research analyzed the family persecution that was done by the patriarch to the catholic members of the family, and the change of outlook on mankind in late Chosŏn. In late Chosŏn, the patriarch's status was absolute in the enhanced patriarchal system. In this social system, only the obedience to the patriarch was allowed to the family members. However, Catholics resisted firmly to the patriarch who wasn't Catholic, so the patriarch harshly restricted and punished the members. In short, more prevalent damage was done by the family rather than late Chosŏn. Thus there should be an understanding of household oppression done by the patriarch when comprehending the category and meaning of Catholic persecution in late Chosŏn.
The reason why the patriarch and the Catholic members severely discorded can be explained by terms of 'faith' and 'change of outlook on mankind'. The catholics opened their hearts to the heterogenetic 'christian belief, and therefore established a new appreciation on mankind. They believed that mankind was manufactured by the creator and that heaven, which man can go by the precious blood of the saviour was the ultimate destination of mankind. Acknowledging the terms, creator, saviour, heaven, hell, and the hereafter(the everlasting world) were totally fresh in understanding mankind. The perspective of grasping mankind was totally altered. These beliefs and new perspective on mankind were trustworthy enough to go beyond the oppression done by the family and country.
