This paper intends to clarify the optical principles in Walt Whitman’s poetry and poetics. Whitman, fascinated by the modern technology of the nineteenth century America, pursued “the poetry of realities and science.” Among the dazzling inventions of the times, daguerreoype enjoyed the greatest popularity in Whitman’s New York. And it provided the poet not only with the pleasurable experience of frequenting photo galleries on Broadway but also with an artistic breakthrough out of the impasse of Emersonian Romanticism toward a new era of American poetry.
Photography and Whitman’s poetry share the realistic mimesis of the physical objects of the world. Notwithstanding Beaudelaire’s and Valery’s strong objections to photographic representation in art, Whitman adopted the properties of camera and turned them to his use for achieving realism in poetry. At the close of this paper, it is suggested for future study that the techniques of camera may also be working for Whitman’s spiritual purposes. But the present paper satisfies itself with clarifying the optical principles of camera and photography operating in Whitman’s poetry for his realistic achievements.
