This paper is an attempt to study Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and examine his peculiar humanistic poetic art in which the themes of Christianity like love, salvation, and evangelism are humanistically extended and finely imaged. In fact, Whitman's Leaves of Grass is deeply influenced by the Bible. However, Whitman's literary and religious thoughts are not purely Christian but are mixed with his liberal and Transcendental ideas due to New England Transcendentalism. He objects to Puritan orthodoxy and substitutes it with his own humanistic view. The combination of humanism and Christianity is one of the great characteristics of Whitman's poetry. Whitman shows his features as a practical Christian humanist who wishes to complete individuals and society by grafting Christian spirits onto politics and literature. Symbolizing his poetry as a new gospel to construct a new America, he himself insists that Christian thoughts will be his principal poetic theme.
The poetic selves created in Leaves of Grass play an important role as poetic devices for constructing Biblical messages to proclaim his poetic missions. Whitman uses some ‘self’ imagery to show his religious concepts of salvation from the sinful nature and a mission to propagate the gospel. He throws Christ-like savior imagery on himself to reveal his poetic mission to establish the goal of human salvation and completion. He translates Christian ideals into political ones by portraying the imagery of Paradise as democratic nations and the cosmopolitan unification of mankind.
Instances of the Biblical imagery, allusion, and ideas found in the poetry illustrate that Whitman not simply proclaims Biblical messages but transcendentally transforms Christian spirit into the religious art from a humanistic point of view. Whitman pervasively uses the Christ-figure imagery portrayed as one of the “few equals” who teaches by words and deeds the righteousness of life and the redemptive value of suffering and sacrifice. Whitman employs the Bible in such a way as to reinforce his own humanistic ideas, which are nurtured on the ground of Christianity, to create his unorthodox religious poetry and world. He designs and images his Christian thoughts using exquisite poetic language and imagery to proclaim that Christian spirits can redeem mankind and lead individuals and society to a new “Paradise.”
