Walt Whitman can be said to te the Ur-American poet in the sense that he sets the tone for American poetic tradition. In spite of his greatness as an American poet, however, he had not been fully appreciated when New Criticism was a predominant literary theory some decades ago. He was too big for New Criticism. Since New Criticism has made way for diverse approaches to literary criticism, many different critical theories can be utilized in reading Whitman's poetry. Of all these diverse theories of literary criticism, the schizoanalysis jointly advocated by Deleuze and Guattari can be very useful in approaching Whitman.
Whitman's poetic writing is rhizomic in that he wanted to demolish the binary oppositions based on the hierarchical order of his day. Replacing the binary oppositions, he valued equality of all the entities. Therefore, no privileged entity can claim priority in his poetry. Body and soul, for instance, are equal, compared to the privileged position of the soul in the hierarchical order. Whitman's concept of equality is the source of energy that activates all the entities in his writing. In this respect, all the elements in his poetry are deterritorialzed as independent and active agents.
What makes his poetry all the more important is that his rhizomic thinking does not remain only as a poetic principle but also as a socially emancipating idea. This can be best demonstrated in his poems dealing with slaves. He believed that the oppressive system of slavery based on the skin color should not have any validity in a truly deterritorialized society. Whitman's rhizomic writing, therefore, does not remain only on the paper but it is also an action plan for a truly equal and free society.
