This study tries to investigate the relationship between different national cultures and the problem of women's education, as it is represented in Elizabeth Barrett Browning's long poem, Aurora Leigh. The problem of culture and (women's) education was a controversial issue in the nineteenth-century England. A true ‘cosmopolitan’ in spirit who lived in Italy for a long time and visited France oftentimes with her husband, Barrett Browning provided a strong critique of Victorian England in her various works including Aurora Leigh. This paper focuses on the topic of cross-cultural differences among England, France, and Italy in the poem, relating it to the contemporary issue of women's education especially in the cases of Aurora and Marian. Opposed to the grand nature and feminine/romantic cultural tradition of Italy, England is represented as a land of tamed landscape, xenophobia, and dehumanized patriarchic utilitarianism, while France occupies an ambivalent position between the two. Resisting her aunt's imposition of "girls' accomplishment," Aurora reads and re-appropriates her father's books; pursuing an independent writer's career, she finally grows up into a mature woman poet. A ‘fallen’ working-class girl, Marian plays a crucial role in Aurora's moral education. Deprived of any chance of formal education, Marian nevertheless comprises an intuitive vision of nature, high morality, and humanized religion. Aurora's circuitous journey back to Italy, with Marian and her baby, and her final union with disfigured Romney, epitomizes a redemptive transformation and symbolic inscription into the creative and recuperative feminine power of Italy.
