The self-declaration of Yahweh in Exodus 34:6 comes at a crucial moment in the history of Israel with Yahweh. Moses insists that Yahweh must go with Israel into the wilderness if there is to be any Israel. Yahweh answers Moses that Yahweh has free compassion, and will act compassionately through history according to Yahweh's own inclination.
In an escallation of his dialogue with Yahweh, Moses asks to see Yahweh's Glory(i.e., Yahweh's face, Yahweh's identity). Yahweh refuses this request, but instead offers to show Moses his "back"(not "face"). Yahweh's real identity remains hidden even to Moses, Yahweh's confidant. He is so great that a human can endure but a glimpse, that is, only his contours(i.e., his back). Is it possible to imagine the contours of Yahweh which Moses was allowed to see?
According to my observations, Exodus 33:19 suggests that Yahweh's attributes (i.e., his rahum, which means compassion[i.e., womb-metaphor] in Hebrew) can only be understood as the back of Yahweh. That is, it is difficult for us to understand Yahweh as anything more than Deus absconditus adque presens. Therefore, the invisible face of Yahweh(i.e. maganlia Dei in history) will always go with us "in our history"(!) and he will give us the joy of His salvation. Here we can find a link to Christian theology, where the theophany of Yahweh, as described in Exodus 33:22-23, is often seen as a foreshadowing of the incarnation of the Word.
