Chapter 8-11 of the Book of Ezekiel provides a vivid account of idolatry practice in Jerusalem, the judgment of Yahweh, and Yahweh’s departure from the Temple of Jerusalem. Through a series of great visions, Ezekiel comes to realize the dire circumstances of Jerusalem, and sees Yahweh’s impending judgment upon the people of Jerusalem. Yahweh’s revelation showed Ezekiel how the people of Jerusalem treated the captives and how Yahweh himself refuted the claims of the Jerusalem inhabitants. In chapter 8 through 11 of the Book of Ezekiel Yahweh promised to the captives that he would become the holy sanctuary. Moreover, Yahweh declared that the land of Israel would be given to the captives. It is revealed from the departure of Yahweh from the temple of Jerusalem that Yahweh is on the side of the captives, not the people of Jerusalem. Through chapter 8 to 11 of the Book of Ezekiel, it can be seen that the comfort and hope for the Jewish people who must have felt overwhelming dejection and sorrow when they were taken into captivity in Babylon are granted in return. Furthermore, chapter 8 through 11 of the Book of Ezekiel serve as the basis on which the captives who returned to the Promised Land in the age of recovery can legitimately call themselves as the children of Yahweh. On such grounds, chapter 8 through 11 of the Book of Ezekiel carries strategic importance as it was recorded and used to claim legitimacy of the captives as the children of Yahweh.
