This paper investigates the functions of gôi in each element forming the tripartite structure of Ezekiel. For this, I analyzed the content, structure, and syntax in each element.
First, the judgment oracles against Israel in Ezekiel 1-24 are the first stage of Yahweh’s restoration program, consisting of four elements (Yahweh’s grace, the reason for the judgment, the instrument of the judgment, the outcome of the judgment), and they systematically describe both the sins of Israel and the contents of their judgment with the term gôi. What is impressive here is that Yahweh’s intention of the judgment is related to Israel’s repentance and their recognition of Yahweh. In this regard, the judgment oracles against Israel are the first stage of Yahweh’s restoration program. Second, the judgment oracles against foreign nations in Ezekiel 25-32 are the second stage of Yahweh’s restoration program, consisting of three elements (the reason for the judgment, the instrument of the judgment, the outcome of the judgment), which systematically describe the sins of foreign nations and the content of their with the term gôi. What is unique here is that the crimes committed by foreign nations against Israel and their arrogance toward Yahweh are emphasized as the reason of the judgment. This is a supporting evidence that the judgment of foreign nations is ultimately closely related to the restoration of Israel. In this regard, the judgment oracles against foreign nations are another stage of Yahweh’s restoration program. Third, the salvation oracles for Israel in Ezekiel 33-39 are the third stage of Yahweh’s restoration program, consisting of four elements (the return of Israel, the restoration of land, the restoration of Israel’s honor, and the restoration of Yahweh’s honor), which systematically describe both the restoration of Israel and their salvation with the term gôi. If the first and second stages are presented as an introduction, the third is now the blueprint for Yahweh’s restoration program. In particular, the four elements mentioned here serve as a specific blueprint for the Yahweh’s restoration program.
In this regard, this study will greatly help us understand the intention of the tripartite structure of Ezekiel and the role of the term gôi.
