Bo-sung Yu-sin-ri seated Ma-Ae Buddha image (hereafter, called Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull) is situated in Bo-sung, closed to the south-west coast of South Korea. Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull is a seated Buddha image with Dharmacakr?, which is rarely found in Korea. The aims of this study were to investigate 1) the date of its construction by examining its geographical and stylistic characteristics, 2) political meanings in constructing such a Ma-Ae-Bull in a remote location such as Bo-sung.
Geographically, Bo-sung was an interchange for sea trade and ground transport. In the ninth century, Jang-bo-go (?-841) had the command of the sea, and his military camp was close to Bo-sung. Between late ninth and early tenth centuries, Kyun-whon's post-Bae-jae territory was not far from Bo-sung. In terms of Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull's style, it's prototype may be the gold-plated three images of buddha which was excavated at An-ap-ji site. The two are similar to each other in terms of overall style, and with regard to auras around the head and the body being decorated with 25 and 8 patterns respectively. Its style suggests that it might be constructed during late Sil-la period (the ninth century).
The style of Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull is highly refined, which suggests a possibility that there were some political reasons to construct it. Its geographical location also indicates that Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull was constructed around late Sil-la period when the central government and local powers were in frequent contacts with a complex inter-relationship. Around mid-ninth century, central noble families (called Jean-gol) used Jang-bo-go's power to appoint their King, and then assassinated him to control over maritime trade. In 857 AD, the opening of Ga-ji-san-moon in Changhung Bo-rim temple might be Jean-gol's strategy to embrace the public sentiment around this region. The construction of Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull might be understood in the same context. As to the reason why Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull's style was similar to that An-ap-ji gold plated images might be due to the fact that An-ap-ji gold plated images represented Moo-yul King's hierarchy.
To summarize, Yu-sin-ri Ma-Ae-Bull was a memorial construction to reflect the relationship between central government and local powers. Future studies may focus on the possibility that it was associated with China's Buddha images, because there were active maritime trade activities between Korea and China via this region during late Sil-la period.
