This essay attempts to capture how the crisis of humanities has been reflected in college students's life, and to seek for alternative space in which scholars in the humanities can function properly against the neo-liberalist educational policy. Should the humanities be expected as that which only offers a fancy academic label to college students in this new era? As a way to address this question, this essay is written based on the survey that was offered from November 17th to 29th in 2000 to the college students of Kwangwoon University where the author works as a faculty member. The survey questions were distributed to ten groups of 50 arbitrarily chosen students for each class of required courses except the students who were taking the course offered by the author. In order for the students not to anticipate the surveyor's intention, the form of all questions of the questionaire was an essay type as opposed to a multiple choice type. In the process of classifying and analyzing the answers of the questions, several separate items were set for classifying seemingly similar answers: and these items were categorized into several different groups according to their main ideas. 360 sets of questionaire of total 500 sets were returned.
The result of the survey shows two distinct tendencies. First, college students in Korea do not show interests in having general knowledge of the contemporary society and the world, whereas they seek for practical successes such as getting a job with a good payment, which is partly caused by their strong individualism. Second, contemporary college students in Korea have a tendency not to identify themselves as potential workers, even though they are supposed to become workers in the future. This phenomenon reflects that current curriculum of required courses in college in general is in crisis, to which history as a requirement course should response more actively. In terms of pedagogical methodologies, most of classes are lecture-oriented without discussions: and the form of exams only requires memorization of facts as opposed to understanding of how the facts work or where they came from. Two alternatives regarding these problems are suggested. On one hand, diversity in teaching should be tried with the emphasis on mutual communication between lecturers and students. On the other hand, current lecture room as a knowledge-buying place should be reconstructed as a place where students can ponder on their own life, and be equipped with their own views of the society and the world.
