The "Reading Material" of high school Korean history textbooks published for the 7th educational curriculum shows the following characteristics.
First, it contributes to the transformation of textbook from expository text to material book, and provides students with opportunity to learn historical archives in real sense.
Second, it puts special importance on historical records in Korea. Especially, it often utilizes the history books published by government and scholars in private sector, and newspapers.
Third, Korean history textbooks of high school maintain the textbook system of differentiating learner's learning level, by providing different level of historical archives in "reading material" section and in "intensive inquiry" section.
This study also indicates some problems in the "reading material" and suggests measures for improvement.
First of all, it has often been found that the content of the "reading material" is not appropriate for understanding the main text. Thus, the textbook writers should pay more attention to selecting proper historical records which fit the historical facts they are explaining.
Second, the writes need to focus both on the concrete details and accuracy of content, since a certain level of vagueness has been found in the content of "reading material".
Lastly, the homogeneity, consistency, and balance should be secured in overall content of Korean history textbook, considering that different writers are covering different periods and areas.
