This study is primarily aimed at introducing and analysing the rapidly changing history curriculums in China. It also helps address possible revisions of Korean History curriculums in the near future and what contents to include in the new textbook. History, which has recently been discussed to include the Korean History and the World History as well.
The main point behind education reform in China during the 1980s was to use 'a variety of textbooks,' but it has been 'a variety of the curriculums' ever since. They regulated and pronounced that History Curriculum Standards be combined with the existing principles of the History Program. In the case of History Curriculum Standards, it has two versions, one for national and the other for local (they are made to be used in local areas). The newly distributed History Curriculum Standards for high schools regulates to include both Chinese History and World History as a single required subject from freshman to senior year. They are very emphatic about teaching their history in connection with the histories of the world.
China has tried to reform the curriculums and so the history programs have changed a lot. But the introduction or the study of them has not been enough. This paper evaluates how the History Programs of middle schools have changed since the foundation of the New China in 1949 ; what changes have they experienced since the open-door policy of reform in the 1990s, and how they will be developed in the 2000s. The National History Curriculum Standards which are going to be in force nationwide after the trial finishes, examined specifically in this paper.
