There were three ways of the succession to the throne from the king Taejo to the king Danjong. Most favorable way is the succession by the primogeniture, which is legitimate, moral and above all most acceptable in the Confucian credo. When it was impossible to adopt the first one, either the succession of the strongest or the succession of the wisest was selected along with the side effect of powerful regality.
King Sejo took the throne by the way of succession of the strongest, imitating the king Taejong, the able strategist of the royal family influencing on the succession process. But the case of king Sejo was not acceptable to the Confucian heritage, which advanced so far with political ideas of Confucianism. In this situation there arose the restoration movement for the dethroned king Danjong. The movement was focused on the succession problem, requesting the moral foundation of political power. So Sejo and his followers were afraid of the strengthening of the cabinet and of the possible revolt of Anpyoung, brother of the king, in cooperation of the highest bureaucrats.
The Royal Annals shows that the Sejo’s followers attacked the king's brother and killed one of the highest bureaucrats, Jongseo Kim. The attacked party maybe thought that it was loyal for the kingship to protect the young king Danjong according to the will of the previous kings. The new king Sejo oppressed the participants of the restoration movements severely. In conclusion, the movement showed the inability of the Confucian bureaucrats and scholars to realize the moral ideas on the political stage.
